Study the history of First World countries. They were very hierarchical class ridden societies where the masses lived in abject poverty and the Royalty and Nobility had absolute power over their subjects. For example let us look at the Victorian era.The slums in Victorian England were absolute cesspools of filth, crime and disease. And these people were not black. They were blue eyed
blonde children who would be wallowing in the filth and dirt in these slums. And they were considered part of "the lower orders" not to be spoken of except with disgust and abhorrence by high society.
And yet slowly but surely they pulled themselves up by their bootstraps to be what they are today. With the passage of time there was a linear correlation towards wealth and prosperity.

@Ben Layden. On a diferent note. The photographers of the time really did a good job capturing the essence of living in victorian times. I think that photography was so expensive and time consuming that they really had to choose their subjects carefully. I, as an amatuer photograper are just getting into street photography and found some inspiration in these old photos. And at the same time feel terrible at how people suffer on these photos. Both then and now. M.

Donald is entitled to his own views like all of us. Perhaps the key question here is, for him to label countries and continents shithole, did he reflect on the role that his own country played in perpetuating some of these so called shitholes including the benefits that Americans firms continue to enjoy from the shitholes. Examples,amongst others, Kenya today is an American spy base in the shithole. Equatorial Guinea and it's long serving corrupt leader continues to enjoy US cover and support in return for the financial gains. Are these two perhaps exempted from the shithole. My concluding remarks: Donald must not shit and spit in a well where some of his citizens are comfortably drinking. This may have unintended consequences on their operations in the shithole.

It's very simple, if you don't like president Trump's policies, then don't go to his country!!
Stay were you are and be subjected to your own country's whim's instead of crying foul over the USA and the UK (Brexit) simply because they offer a better future!

@Mxxx yes but it's seldom true that all of a nation's populace votes for the people that lead African countries into destitution. If it's the countries that are s###holes, does it mean all the people are as well?

As an American, I would hate to be judged based on an orange, crass, mop-headed bucket who seemingly forgets that his own grandfather was an emigrant.

Similarly, if the leaders in Africa are an issue, does that automatically filter down to all its citizens?

@Ben so is the point that First World countries, through whatever means, managed to grow to the levels of wealth seen today? Whereas Africa seems to go the other way?

This is potentially a hornet's nest for a nice Sunday debate so let's agree to keep it friendly :). My argument is that South Africa has never been a wonderful First World country that was reduced to ashes soon after the Apartheid era ended.

It's always been a matter of perspective as South African is often described as being both a First and Third World country. Its grouping is dependent on your own perspective. For the majority of the population, it is, and has always been, a Third World country. Only a minority had the opportunity to experience the First World over here.

This country is still far from First World but the dynamics are a little too complex to get into on a lazy afternoon such as this.
