So coming back after being out of the country for an extended period I am absolutely gobsmacked at how expensive things have become.

This brings me to the ladies, those threads where you highlight expenses now make complete sense and take my understanding to the next level. Im sure this has been the slow boil experience for most when it comes to finance but holy crap this country is bloody expensive!

I actually find overseas more expensive depending what is purchased. You will never get a McDonald's meal for R40.
The few places I've been to it costs like R80 to R100 for a basic meal

Punting wise, SA is considerably cheaper than other countries. Escorts in Europe, US and Dubai often charge upwards of USD300 per hour. That can get you an overnight in some places here.

@ highheels4me,
From which country have you returned to SA ?

It is very cheap to live in SA.
You can get by with very little money.

Agreed, now take into account the minimum wage in say the UK which is 7.70 (R141.52) a bacon double cheeseburger costs 1.99(R36.56) not sure of SA price. Biltong last year in SA was R199.99 this year R299.00 a 50% increase so no boiling frog

Overseas depending what and where you buy can be expensive but the prices stay constant, in SA every time you visit the store prices have gone up

Agreed.
And not just in stores.
Electricity, fuel; the list goes on and it doesn't stop!
We not getting paid in dollars/ Euro and our rand value has decrease dramatically.
The pay stays the same and everything else are unaffordable.
People who gets paid in $ think it's cheap living in South Africa and your money can go far....
