Reasons to take a gift
1) I'm old fashioned and my mother taught me that taking a gift is a sign of respect and proof of good intent
2) If you go to a braai and you take flowers or a salad or a bottle, I assume you give it to the host before the function. Or do you propose you keep it in the boot till you saw if they serve chicken or filled? Size wise the gift to is hardly a contribution, it's a token of respect
3) I mostly visit retainer ladies, so cash is already out of the way, but should cash be part of the visit, then I wrap the cash around the gift with an elastic band. So you hand over the gift, she accepts appropriately to a gift and not with a "do you need a receipt" expression

I am aware of the fact that gifts are also culture bound. In the Muslim culture for instance there is a bigger expectation of a return gift. So it may well be that some punters think of gifts more in an "exchange" sense, but I can assure you, I gift not out of desperation (payment removed that angle) but out of respect.

* Instead of gifts, tip rather as the money would be much more of a necessity especially in these trying times. Take the cash for the gift and add it to the tip and increase the tip in value, length and girth.
