nothing will change. nor will the harassment. nor will there be a greater acceptance or protection of SP's who sell their body for sex.

Gender based violence is a way of life among many, never mind otherwise. Where is the protection there?

Maybe a redlight district where one knowingly goes to flavour ones desires.
Question though...is the whole of SA not anyways a HUGE red light district with 'call girls ' nearly in every city? Just go on to the nett and u can pick and choose... no fear of repercussion except for the extortionists...even the Russians are importing girls by the dozen simply because they can. And look at the Asian explosion?

As to taxes etc...who says taxes are not paid and businesses not registered. How does one account for earnings...well, for some of us. But then again in SA who actually cares to pay taxes.

As to health care...it is non-existent anyways so what is there to gain with legalising prostitution?
If a girl aint gonna look after herself now then there is a chance she aint gonna do it anyways.

and lastly, my resume does not read, Service Provider who tickles cocks for a living and i do not think it ever will...even should cock tickling become legalised.

Question to punters...will it change your viewpoint on SP's and if so, how?

RB.

Would be nice to hear from more SP's as to their feelings about this.

I personally think the only thing to gain here is for the government to tax us.

Other than that, we as working girls don't benefit more than what we already do.

In my personal case, my GP, psychologist and psychiatrist know what I do for a living and I get amazing support from them. So I won't benefit more with regards to healthcare.

Financially, maybe, maybe not. Either way, putting "escort" on my resume regardless of it being decriminalised or not is not going to happen. There will always be a stigma attached to it.

Legalization and decriminalization would be an awesome start.
There could be some kind of buffer in place that might help in preventing wg's getting taken advantage off and exploited.
As it stands now, the doctrine of clean hands apply which makes it next to impossible for wg's to seek help if they are really in trouble.

Sadly, I have to agree with some opinions mentioned above: discrimination/harassment/stigma won't stop because of it.

Although I do find in my personal life that sex work has become more mainstream and acceptable.

My 2 cents

They just want tax money from us after realizing that we hold up the economy next thing they will tell ladies is to go register and I for one will not share my money I work hard for alone with no government...

It's already officially happening indirectly though, at least for OnlyFans sex work:
www.iol.co.za/amp/news/south-africa/gauteng/if-youre-taxing-onlyfans-decriminalise-sex-work-government-told-926d2e37-32fd-4fa5-90d0-b334c0eed914

(And illegal income is *supposed* to be taxed anyway)

Here's my question though: as things stand, the tax burden in the country is currently very heavy on a tiny percentage of the population:
businesstech.co.za/news/finance/472698/1-6-million-people-are-paying-most-of-south-africas-income-tax/amp/

Now without getting sidetracked into discussions of whether or not the government will do anything good with the money, don't you believe that the above is unfair, and that everyone liable for personal income tax should be playing their part?

In my opinion, I'd be happy with "decriminalization". No way I would put "Service Provider" on a CV, just a very (VERY) slight relief with regards to implications should I have a run in with law.

I can't see there being any form of "net work" being put in place with regard to medical benefits.

Only real benefit government might have for legalized sex work is the taX... BUT how on earth do they intend on managing that if they aren't really keeping other above the board business in check?

On the flip side service providers declaring income (as a sole proprietor- even if it's minimum) does put them in a place to allow for credit and loans.
But there does not need to be law or legalized sex work to be able to do that.

(Just my morning coffee thoughts)

In terms of stigma etc. I disagree with RB. Sure, it won't change overnight, but anyone who has been to Amsterdam or Germany can attest, they are much more open and progressive about sex work. It'll take a while to get there but decriminalisation/legalisation is an important first step.

On tax - I don't think it would be a huge revenue spinner for government. The bigger /quality venues would mostly already be registered businesses (they're just describing themselves as "entertainment" or "massage" or somesuch), and by and large the independent ladies operate on a cash basis, which makes it *MUCH* easier to under report earnings (its a bit like the taxi industry - because its mostly cash its very hard for gov to tax properly, and its a big reason why the taxi industry has opposed a single card that you swipe that would allow you to travel on buses, taxis, trains etc.)

The rest of the "benefits" depend on what government has in mind - e.g. on healthcare if they follow some of the European countries it might improve access, if the plan is just legalise and do nothing else, fuck all will change.

But I think an important point is that there is a huge chunk of the market that operates offline - and a huge part of that is considerably worse off than many of the providers here (e.g. street walkers etc) and there is fairly extensive research on the benefits that they would get from such a move.

(e.g. https://nswp.org/resource/member-publications/why-sex-work-should-be-decriminalised-south-africa#:~:text=Human%20Rights%20Watch%20and%20the,respond%20to%20the%20HIV%20pandemic.

Note SWEAT who wrote this report aren't just academics in ivory towers theorising about possible impacts, they are primarily staffed by current and former sex workers, and their reports are based on interviews with sex workers so they should be taken seriously on this)

Legalizing it will certainly not take care of the gbv issue. The cops are still not going to give a shit about women that rent out their bodies, just like they don't give a damn about anything or anyone.
Secondly, I am not for paying tax with money made by using mine.
