Not all Catholics give up sex. Recently I had a conversation with another catholic and their parish priest said that they don't need to give up anything for lent they just need to become better people within themselves. Wise priest.

Very true, but the idea is to give up something as a way of self-denial to show penance or commemoration. It's always up to the individual, so let the punters be.
