Its not just about affordibility. There are plenty of guys that can spend as much on punting, but punting is not their only interest, they have other interests too such as investing and doing something productive with their money, making their money work for them. The question is, how much can you afford to waste. Yes, you may be able to spend R20k a month on punting, but if you think about what else you can and should be doing with your money, can you still afford to spend that much on punting? Where is your cut off point all things considered? For me, there is a level of spend above which punting just becomes wasteful and the upside of the pleasure is not enough to outweigh the downside of other opportunities that I am missing out on. If you put that money in your bond or calculate what you could sit with if you invested R20k a month for the next 5 to 10 years or for retirement in the stockmarket it puts things into perspective. And every month you lose out on those opportunities. I am not saying don't punt, but work out a plan of the things you can do with your extra cash and pay yourself first before you punt.

Punting trumps everything else boss. You cant take your wealth to the afterlife when you die so might as well enjoy it on punani.

You can enjoy it on other things too boss, my post is not about taking it into the after life. Just be a bit more clever with your money, in no time you can punt with your interest or dividends. That's all.

My plans for May will be similar to Fire's - last bit of Autumn before winter sets in. Guess I will see Matt on the road. A

Unless that is exactly what FIHH is already doing...

Punting is an unbelievably pleasurable pastime, that is if you have the time and money to indulge in it.
I cannot think of any other pleasure equal to it.
We spend our entire life chasing the rainbow of one day having enough time and money to spend on yourself. Sadly many of us do not reach the pot of gold.
So it is a perfectly rational choice to to spend your money NOW, perhaps on punting?

Oh my dear fellow punters, can we put the budget topic away and focus on the ladies and their services? ;)

Plenty of other pleasurable things to do in addition to punting. Travel, by a fast car, or a boat, buy a holiday apartment on the north coast of Durban or in Cape Town. I'm not saying don't punt, just that if that's your only focus it really is a waste. Anyway, as FIHH has said, let's move on from budget discussions.

Fire in her Hole

I like this thread. There are some nice points to take out of it.

Symbol

Delayed gratification? Absolutely, if we invest wisely, we can have both the financial returns and the pleasure that that can buy us.

Mujahid, boss

Yes, we can't take wealth into the afterlife, so, let's put it to good use, in this life.

Professor Ben

Yes, punting is immensely pleasurable and yes, sometimes we wait too long to indulge in certain pleasures.

Enjoy the plan, Fire in her hole.

I can see the ladies at HOE now, busy planning on how to spend their May bonus with so many promises of punters saving up for the month ahead

I can also see the credit managers of all the banks practising their stern voice.....'sir.....you are way over your credit card limit....what is this 'HOE' place you are spending at so lavishly ?'.....who knows you might invite him out to join you and in so doing get a nice limit increase on your credit card too, especially after you 'accidently'post that pic of him with the ladies in the jacuzzi on FB when he was supposed to be out seeing that important client at a business venue......😆
