So men have a very convenient label for someone with whom they are simply enjoying a dalliance: mistress. And no I am not talking about the stupid BDSM term "mistress". But what does the lady in said dalliance call the man? Ben Layden - can you bring your vocabulary to bear here? The best I can come up with is "paramour" or "lover".
He is a Cicisbeo.
Pronounced Chi-Chiz bo.
In decadent 18th century Italy it was common practice for high society ladies to take on a lover or lovers, called cicisbei(plural).
In Spain he was called the caballero galante.
The institution of Cicisbeatura in Europe was really a protest against the insipidity of conjugal intercourse.
The male equivalent of a mistress is the Italian word from the 17th and 18th century, cicisbeo. It's a male escort or lover of a married woman. It's pronounced, chee-chiz-bey-o.
