Yes it is real. And the lady in question is not the only one. It is a fact and a constant threat in every punter's and every prostitute's life.
Nationally, HIV prevalence among sex workers is estimated at 59.6% although this varies between areas, with prevalence estimated at 72% in Johannesburg, 54% in Durban and 40% in Cape Town. In 2010, sex work accounted for an estimated 19.8% of all new HIV infections in South Africa.
Female sex workers are particularly affected, with studies finding HIV prevalence among this group to range from 40% to 88%, significantly higher than among women in the general population (14.4%). In particular, young female sex workers (under 25) carry a heavy HIV burden.

However, I would think many times before trusting the WWW in branding someone HIV positive.
I just hope to Providence all HIV positive workers and punters do not miss a day in taking their ART and that all their viral loads are lower than detectable...
Safe punting, y'all!

Hey, Miss VF, the references are listed. Do check them out. Everything is explained in the "materials and methods" section of each paper. In most studies the ladies submitted to a serology test. Best regards.

But where do these ladies come from?
The streets? Truck stops? Townships? Esa? lol.
And I find it strange to have an 'estimate' as specific as 72%....How can an estimate be that specific in terms of a statistic? Don't really have the time or inclination to read through the lot! Just want to understand this without reading a thesis!
