"unsuspecting" referred to the fact that you don't see the dagger coming. It is pushed into your back, from behind, with vicious intent. You are not anticipating this.
The guy doing it has been biding his time, waiting for the right opportunity.
That would be the meaning of the word "unsuspecting"
