Hi Guys
Just some feedback on the current problems you are experiencing. Guys, we really wouldn't lie about the gold member thing... really. There's no point. If we secretly only allowed gold members but told everyone that it is open for normal members, the only possible outcome from that situation would be that we have a lot of frustrated normal members.
This website requires three ingredients to operate successfully, good content, a well written system, and happy visitors. This is something that we understand and we won't purposefully mislead our visitors into thinking something is true when it isn't.
But back to the problem at hand. We've decided to rewrite the entire chat application. We're learned a lot about live video streaming in the last 3 months and a complete rewrite might sort out some bugs that we either don't know about, or bugs that cannot be simulated/replicated on our testing machines.
Just to be 100% safe, we will run the video streaming on a non standard port. Just about every broadband account sold in South Africa is 'shaped'. It is possible that the ISP's mistake the video stream for peer to peer traffic, and that they incorrectly slow down the video and chat streams, which will cause the application to sometimes not load.
Our new application will have better diagnostic information, which will help us pinpoint problems more easily. It will for example say: 'Contacting streaming server...' 'Connection Accepted', 'Chat stream received', etc. If anything fails, we'll know exactly where it failed.
For now we will leave the current chat application running - it works correctly for 90% of our visitors and from all the test machines we could lay our hands on. We would however like a 100% successrate for people with direct internet connections (we'll revisit the corporate network issue once we have the new application launched)
If all goes well, we will have the new application ready by Wednesday next week (no long weekend for us).
I hope this clears things up. Otherwise I'm really looking forward to launching the new application and will let you now when it is ready
Regards
James
