What area are you looking to go?

For me nothing beats the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, but like the Kruger I won't recommend it for December.

Around Bela Bela you will find Mbizi, Mabalingwe Sondela, close to Hammanskraal is the Dinokeng Resort in the Dinokeng Nature Reserve, very nice.

The Pilansberg is beautiful, but it gets too crowded on holidays and some people that camp there don't go for nature, they go there to party(especially stidents) then they get loud and spoil it for everybody.

Pilanesberg is really worth a visit. Out of holiday season it's nice and quiet and because it's a smaller park you easily get to see the big 5 over a weekend. At night it's nice and quiet then to enjoy the night sounds and eachother's company.

I'd also recommend Marakele Park. You can book on SAN parks website.
Close enough to pta and very wild and stunning.
Not sure they have a caravan site, I think it's all safari tents. But worth looking into.
