John Boorman, whose previous movie Deliverance was a great success, when asked about Zardoz:
"Um, it was the 70’s, and I was doing a lot of drugs. Frankly, even I’m not entirely sure what parts of the movie are about"
Perhaps an unintentional commentary on life, anyway, the meaning of which often escapes us, and in which a great deal is simply invented "entertainment and amusement" - for the masses? But who is in truth the inventor, the original fount? Is the universe here for our entertainment or are we ourselves just part of the act for some other unseen and unknown audience, with God as the ringmaster? At least we each have our own realities and relationships to help keep us sane, even if they do drive us wild occasionally.
