Apon Googling myself I saw the company I work for posted an article about me about two years ago a postive one that I never expected to be used against me like this. It's easy to put together from there as my surname is quite unique and can't be misplaced. So yeah I freaked out and have still been freaking out. Seeing this forum post is a huge help.

Noooooo! You must tell him to go naai his mother first and then send him a pic of the ugliest poes you can find on the internet and tell him that his mothers poes looks like that now after you were there first. Then, only after you have told him this, block him.

Well known scam at this point. Any law enforcement office will not call you beforehand. If charges have been laid against you and there is a warrant for your arrest, the police will just show up to your residence/place of work and arrest you.

It's also relatively simple to find a bit of information on someone through a google search. Many people have public social media profiles (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc) and all of those will show during a search. You can however restrict your profiles/select what non-connected viewers of your profile can and cannot see and it is worth the 5 minutes to do this across all social media (LinkedIn included).

It is always advisable to use a punting sim and punting phone and to change out said punting sim regularly. The punting phone should also remain off when not being used. There is a chance the number for the punting sim will get shared with these scammers, but in the case, just block the number and continue. No harm should come of it.

Take care out there ladies and gentlemen.

Am I right in saying that I would have been arrested versus getting a phone call to say I'm going to be arrested

Absolutely. Since when do SAPS actually call a suspect to warn them before an arrest. But he said he's calling to help you :D he just wants to make sure you get his bank deets right.

Normally just to threaten and extort a bribe. Or someone playing a very bad joke unknowingly or knowingly in the case of knowingly might be someone whose trying to get you to stop punting or make you someone else
