You need to be qualified to at least Fire Fighter 1, Basic Ambulance Assistant (aka Basic Life Support medic) and HazMat Awareness before you can apply for a job as a FF/EMT with CoJ. (In other words you have to fund at least that level of training yourself to get in to the career)
Not sure if CoJ then upskill employees to FF2 and HazMat Operator. I know they train some as Ambulance Emergency Assistant (aka Intermediate Life Support, who can do drips, and administer a defined list of meds and perform certain procedures.
But CoJ do a huge amount of training for more advanced things like USAR, Urban Search and Rescue, which is hanging off cliffs on ropes, working in pipes etc, with a very demanding fitness test out West on the mines.
I imagine an investigation will determine what actually happened last week.
