Your ONLY weapon is your legs. If the behaviour isn't reasonable, run. Anything else just causes more problems. If you bring any kind of physical weapon into play, you are going to come out worse because 99.99% of the time you can be overwhelmed and then you have a severely pissed off attacker on your hands.

If you are contemplating protection, it is always a good idea to know what it is that you are protecting (the asset value), and also to understand what level of threat you are trying to counter. Then consider those areas where you are vulnerable. These three factors make up a risk assessment. More on that later.

If you are not trained, or willing to be trained (and committed to practice regularly) in conventional weapons, then rather stay away from them, because they will be taken from you and used against you. The constitution of this country may tell you that you are equal to men, but sadly when it comes to the physical, ladies are lacking in upper body strength (amongst others). So that rules out moering tools like sjamboks, batons, tonfas, etc. as well as sharp things such as knives, axes, daggers, swords and suchlike.

Naturally the best tool for self-defence is a firearm, but it too comes with a host of issues. Firstly, you need to train (and train regularly). Second, you need to go through the ridiculous application process (whose sole purpose is to disarm honest citizens). Thirdly, you need to reconcile with the fact that if violence escalates you will need to take a life. Some folks can't do this, and somehow they think that if they just have one to flash around, everything will be OK. This is simply not the case – in fact it may be the reason for the attack in the first place. Fourthly, you will need to have it on you (under your control) for it to be effective and considering your vocation, this could be somewhat difficult.

Pepper spray / an air horn could be effective against a "chancer", but you also need to consider that not all are "chancers" and some will be more serious than that (think disgruntled wives, hardened rapists etc.) They are cheap, relatively easy to carry in a handbag and reasonably effective. Just remember that pepperspray only affects 9/10 people and against a trained and focussed attacker will be of little deterrent value. The majority of pepper sprays are of the "fogger" type, you will probably find that the direct stream is far more effective. You will also need to practice with it, to understand how it works and how it can be most effectively used. You should consider deploying it and then running – depending on the scenario you may need to make as much distance as possible between you and an attacker.

If, as you have indicated, the threat is merely a "chancer", then I suggest joining a Kickboxing or Muay Thai dojo and attending classes regularly. Not only will you be learning skills, but it is a lot of fun, you get to expand your social circle and perhaps more importantly, it is a great aerobic sport and you will be able to keep your booty in shape.

Lastly, you need to consider various scenarios and plan accordingly. Do not be paranoid, but at the same time, plan for the worst scenario. Ask yourself a question: Is it really wise to work alone? Is it not better to work for a busy establishment? Is it wise to always insist on cash, or would a credit card machine not be a more prudent choice? If you decrease the asset value, then the risk has also decreased. A good plan (coupled with regular drills) can be a lifesaver.

Good luck!

A large taser, like this one www.google.com/imgres
works quite well for me in the queue at Woolworth's!

Seriously Bluetjie,
for starters you'd better move to a better area, should help.
Then, be in a house so that a single scream for HELP will have troops storming in, both help & a deterrent. A remote triggering a siren will also work but then have several mounted in the room.
Lastly, a small pepperspray works wonders, but do keep in mind that the second you use it you make for the door... as this stuff will also affect you yourself. You hide this gadget, always, never ever show it unless you will use it!

If you promise you'll get a sjambok I'll visit and show you how a bloke will take this from you in under a second... size does matter remember? He then will have a field day using it on you, not a good idea.

Just saw Cool909's review and his statement "...her tits tasted like cum." begs the question: How does he know what cum tastes like?

Thanks for a good laugh!

the short answer is run and scream your head off. If you can, get a panic button installed with armed responce.

For the long answer see Strontium's post above.

Chancers will break if you just scream but they are not much of a threat anyway. A determined attacker is effectively unbeatable, so your best chance is to run. Only a few weapons will stop a determined attacker, none of which are practical in a WG situation (shotgun + training, concealed handgun + training + practice, etc.)

In my numerous encounters I rely on a handgun with ample training and experience. I have tried everything from pepper spray to axes, tazers to crossbows, they all have their uses but none of them are good all-rounders like a gun. Even then, I would not recommend a gun for most people, it is what works for me and I doubt that it will work for a WG because it is unlikely that she will be able to conceal it nearby, be able to bring it to use before she gets overwhelmed. A gun in close quarters is extremely difficult to use and my guess is that 7 times out of 10 the gun will be taken and used against the WG.

Prevention is always better than cure. No protection is guaranteed to help and as already been said may even make things worse. Below are some tips.

Work from a place that is safer. Worst case is working on your own from a small holding or some remote place. Like someone said, a house with other ladies is preferable, or in a complex where you have neighbours and preferably with another wg, you will save on rent and it is good from a safety perspective.

Work "safer" working hours. You are probably more likely to be attacked at 2 in the morning than during the day.

Start a communication system with another girl/s where you let each other know regularly that you are safe and they know that something is wrong if you haven't checked in.

Only travel to selected hotels, much safer and less chance of anything happening. In addition let a friend know where you are travelling to, and check in once you are comfortable things are safe as well as afterwards. Also let your driver wait for you and come look for you if you are not out at an agreed time. Pay extra if you have to.

Use the wg forum to your advantage get information on suspicious punters and tips from other ladies.

Trust your instincts, if you have a bad feeling about someone that is trying to make a booking, don't see him.

Last but not least, deliver excellent service so that you can build up a base of trustworthy regulars, that way you will still make money without having to take unnecessary risks.

The issue with most weapons and devices market towards ladies is that you have to be very close to use them. (tazers, stun guns, peper spray etc) the same is true of knives.

The problem is that if they are not within arm’s reach they are worse than useless. Knowing you have a weapon but cannot get to it can be a powerful psychological deficit.

People spend far too much time thinking about how to get to the device leading them to pay far less attention to the immediate threat.

There is then the issue that as a 1.5m lady you will not be physically strong to deter even a moderately enthusiastic attack. That is unless you have some form of training.

By far the most powerful weapon for a lady is her body. I have worked with similarly sized ladies in the close protection field that can but a 2m 130kg guy on his ass in the ring, dojo or more impressively in the garden during a braai when the guy had all to prove in front of his friends.

As Strontium says, some form of physical self-defence skill is best. Shop around as different people have different preferences. My preference is Krav Maga, the main philosophy of which is to always avoid violence where possible but, where this is impossible to neutralise a threat with incredible violence and to depart the scene. Most people believe it to be great for big chunky guys and there is a macho crowd associated with it on occasion but it is perfect for ladies no matter what size.

If not trained it is amazing how debilitating a blow, claw or squeeze to the centreline can be. Eyes, nose, chin throat, solar plexus, testicles. The secret is incredible violence delivered vigorously without remorse. However without training most people find themselves unable to bite scratch or smack someone in the face with the nearest item, an alarm, jar of sugar or huge rubber dildo clock for example. (if you got it use it!)

Again as Strontium says, perform a bit of threat analysis and mitigation at your work place. Where would you be cornered? Can you leave a window closed but unlatched and escape through it. Are their colleagues that would hear a shout? What can you grasp as a weapon? You are more likely to have a knife or pepper spray used against you than an alarm clock (old fashioned, wind up, glass front with big bells on top).

What could be used to restrain you? Electrical flex, scarves, and so on should not be in plain sight or easy to reach.

Standard WG protocols when on an out call should always be adhered to. Saftey call to an associate on arrival and calls or texts on an hourly basis. Pay the driver to wait for you wherever possible. Look around at doors and windows. How was the door locked behind you, was the key left in or where was it put? Ask the punter to leave the key in the door. You are 1.5m, was the door bolted above where you can reach?

We could write a book on WG safety. In fact, there’s a thought…
