Mania is one of the key features of bipolar disorder; it's a state of extreme mood elevation, energy, and activity. It's more than just feeling "happy" or "energized"---mania can significantly impact a person's judgment, behavior, and daily functioning.

Someone with BPD, experiencing mania may present with the following symptoms:

1. Elevated Mood:

People in a manic state often feel an intense, euphoric, or unusually "high" mood. They may describe feeling invincible, overly confident, or like they can accomplish anything.

2. Increased Energy and Activity:

Mania is often marked by an overwhelming surge of energy. A person may feel the need to do many things at once, engage in multiple activities, and experience a sense of restlessness.

This can lead to hyperactivity, where the person feels driven to constantly be "on the go," even if their actions are unproductive or scattered.

3. Racing Thoughts:

A hallmark of mania is racing thoughts---a rapid, uncontrollable flow of ideas or internal dialogue. The person may jump from one topic to another without fully completing a thought or conversation.

This mental overdrive can make it difficult to focus or engage in coherent conversations.

4. Impulsivity and Poor Judgment:

Mania often leads to impulsive behaviors or poor decision-making, where the person may engage in risky activities without considering the consequences.

Examples include spamming forums, reckless spending, risky sexual behavior, quitting jobs on a whim, or making grandiose plans that are unrealistic.

5. Decreased Need for Sleep:

People in a manic episode often feel like they don't need much (or any) sleep. They might stay up for days with very little rest but still feel energized.

This lack of sleep doesn't result in typical tiredness, which can contribute to the cycle of high energy and activity.

6. Grandiosity:

Grandiosity refers to an inflated sense of self-importance or an exaggerated belief in one's abilities. A person may believe they have special powers, talents, or insights.

This can manifest as unrealistic goals, like believing they are destined to change the world or that they can do something without any experience or planning.

7. Hyperverbalism (Talking Excessively):

People experiencing mania may talk rapidly and excessively, often not allowing others to get a word in. Their speech can be loud, pressured, and difficult to follow because they are jumping from one idea to another.

8. Risk of Psychosis:

In severe cases, mania can involve psychotic features, where a person may experience delusions (false beliefs) or hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren't there).

For example, they might believe they have a special connection with a famous person, or that they are on a divine mission.

Aftermath of a Manic Episode

1. Crash into Depression:

After a manic episode, individuals often "crash" into a depressive state. This switch from extreme highs to deep lows is part of what characterizes bipolar disorder.

The depressive phase can be just as intense as the manic phase but in the opposite direction, with feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and low energy.

2. Consequences of Mania:

Once the manic episode is over, individuals may have to deal with the consequences of their impulsive or risky actions, such as forum banning, financial debt, damaged relationships, or even legal trouble. These consequences can worsen the depressive phase and cause shame or regret.

We must be sensitive to those with bipolar disorder. It's as difficult for them as it is to us.

Indeed. When the manic stage ends, one must understand that the forum has matured into an understanding place for those who are burdened by mental health issues.

I did not want to be the one to mention any of the names as I'm back on the forum a much calmer person.
