Aside from agreeing with your use of the English language.

My pet peeve is "me and John are having a special".... Argh... It's "John and I!!!!"

But I also remind myself that we don't all have English as our first language in SA. And anyone else posting in English as a second language, should be admired.
As they speak another language that I don't speak? English may not be the language that they grew up speaking? Try learning a new language?
Congratulations to them, that's an accomplishment in any country!

Missing Litisha, too much!

My ear is assailed by all this chatter in the vernacular in the malls, in the banks, in the supermarkets and in the street.

Ladies and gentlemen if you want to get on in the world, speak English!

To the youngsters:
Don't begin every sentence with these silly superfluities:
"I'm like...." or "basically...".

VeryWicked01, a bit harsh. I would assume you are also well versed in the 10 other official languages. Perhaps some Mills & Boon would tickle your fancy

Let's face it.
English is a strange language.
There is no egg in the eggplant,
No ham in the hamburger,
And neither pine nor apple in the pineapple.
English muffins were not invented in England.
French fries were not invented in France.

We sometimes take English for granted,
But if we examine its paradoxes we find that
Quicksand takes you down slowly,
Boxing rings are square,
And a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

If writers write, how come fingers don't fing.
If the plural of tooth is teeth,
Shouldn't the plural of phone booth be phone beeth?
If the teacher taught,
Why didn't the preacher praught.

If a vegetarian eats vegetables,
What the heck does a humanitarian eat!?
Why do people recite at a play,
Yet play at a recital?
Park on driveways and
Drive on parkways?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy
Of a language where a house can burn up as
It burns down,
And in which you fill in a form
By filling it out,
And a bell is only heard once it goes!

English was invented by people, not computers,
And it reflects the creativity of the human race
(Which of course isn't a race at all).

That is why
When the stars are out they are visible,
But when the lights are out they are invisible.
And why it is that when I wind up my watch
It starts,
But when I wind up this poem
It ends.

I feel there is a global conspiracy to eliminate all other languages.

Personaly I have mastered the art of trying to make sense of what non english speakers are trying to say. If the roles were reversed I would suck at their native languge.

There more important things to worry about in life than ones inability to grasp the Queens language.

On the flip side, do Afrikaans speaking university students have an advantage over native Zulu or Xhosa students who have to complete their studies in english?
