Professor Ben

You're a man after my own heart. Your approach to life is so healthy.

Ps. I drive an even older car than yours.

The new C-class coupe looks awesome. Pity I need something more practical and spacious.

My advice, if you can't buy cash, which is difficult for most of us, at least try and put down a huge deposit and pay the car off as quickly as possible. I paid my Mercedes off in two years and have been driving it for about 6. With a FULL motorplan it only costs me insurance, petrol and tyres. But I need to look for something else as motor plan will soon run out. Forget about leasing, and deals with residuals and balloon payments, etc. You end up spending so much if you want to keep the car, or if you change it for a new one every few years you just continue to have car payments forever and a day that keep increasing with every new car that you get.

And it will mean that you will have to be more reasonable with what you buy, but guess what, living within your means and not keeping up with the Joneses has never hurt anyone.

I know that the baloon payment or "Gauranteed Future Value" is a con to lock consumers in. Merc told me I can hand the vehicle back after 3 years. Then no baloon only "fair wear & tear" cost to be paid. only thing is after paying 3 years you dont have anything. you can keep the car and pay the balloon or enter into new lease.

I fully agree best to save up and buy cash.

I dont care about the Joneses, I just enjoy driving nice cars. my current baby I bought for pure driving pleasure! doesnt hurt if chicks dig it either.

Certainly did not hurt me.
I bought my jalopy for cash for R45k in the year 2000.
Company car.
Still going strong.

Ben bhai, how is it even possible to drive a car older than 5 years in Gauteng? unless you work like 2km from work and dont rack up mileage.

My current baby is a 2012 model and I hit 90,000km already. Its not practical to drive a too old car in Jozi.

I have an holy aversion to debt.

Me too, I'm allergic to bad debt and being broke. Learned the hard way very early in my career. It was a hard and long climb to being free from all bad debt. Now I just have a bond and even that sucker I'm trying to kill with all my might.

I confess I recently bought a R350k car brand new for cash.
My old car I only use to get to work and to the mosque and back - both sacred places are not far from my abode.
I would not take a chance with my old car to go even to ORT airport.
That way I save my new car from wear and tear.

But for youngsters I recommend you prioritize investing in appreciating assets such as property and unit trusts instead of a top end motor car.

By your favour sir:
I have no desire to own what, in accordance with current fashion in automobile nomenclature is styled( one assumes inappropriately) a "Jaguar".

I would as lief drive an Audi A4 as the curiously named "Jaguar", "Mustang" or "Porsche".

Im staring at the pics of the new C Coupe and starting to get irrational thoughts like selling one of my investment properties and put my name on the order list! Potentially a great panty dropper!
