Same with using eating utensils. The knife is NEVER put into one's mouth to lick it off. It simply goes against my grain to see someone doing it, and I must force myself to remain quiet not to say something.

Peterbucks, by your favour:

To a person unaccustomed to a knife and fork, your ingenious disquisition on good table manners would appear to be ludicrous. To anyone who partakes of his potage with his fingers it would be so trifling a circumstance as to be hardly worth notice.
By the by, I must not omit to mention that though I partake of my dinner with my fingers, I can also ply a good knife and fork.

But I thank you for the tip.

Hi Ben

My apologies , I was just referring to my own upbringing and the culture prevalent in our house.

I take note of your way of eating with your fingers, and will read up about it. Sadly that knowledge is lacking on my side at present. And I have not been exposed to that at all, which now seems a little strange in hindsight.

A man with manners will know how to court a lady.

A woman with manners will know how to make her man feel like a king.

Manners to all....costs nothing even if unappreciated by the recipient....somewhere in the deep subconcious it does register.

And having the ability to put manners before "ego", because I am sure we all have inherent" manners , takes a person of true character.

Chivalry and Manners. The lost arts of our generation...

The simple act of giving your seat to a lady these days is met with derision in Spain for example as it is seen as archaic and sexist.
I found it very uncomfortable trying to not do the little things like opening doors and remaining seated on a train while a woman stood next to me.

Deamonza....
Dearest sir.
I prefer to be treated as the fairer sex and in no way find chivalry sexist.

Sadly this modern world has confused many a concept.

Come be my gentleman, and offer me your seat and I shall gladly accept. And should I offer to sit on your lap and put my hands round your neck and plant a happy peck on your cheek, as a reward for your chivalry, I trust u shall accept?

@deamonza: I really would not set my standards by the Spanish, they managed to wipe out 2 whole civilisations in the name of Christianity and still kill bulls and call it sport.

Unless she proves she is not worth it, a women should always be treated as the so called fairer sex.

In todays age, when a lot of women are earning as much if not more than their mate, it is still polite to treat them as ladies.

That said, it is nice to have them pay for diner.

Manners is important as it builds your character and opens doors to many opportunities. People who have no manners will never be invited again while those with good manners will always be welcomed back.

To borrow from Mr.Burke, lamenting the beheading of Marie Antoinette:
"I thought 10,000 swords must have leaped from their scabbards to avenge even a look that threatened her with insult. But the age of chivalry is gone."

Forget wars, mayhem, high diplomacy.
Show me the exact spot where Louisa dropped her slipper.
