Driving skills (or lack thereof), alertness, attitude, cell phones, alcohol, unroadworthy vehicles etc, are all huge contributory factors. Some folk can drive safely at 150kms per hour while others can only drive comfortably and safely at 80kms p/hour while others shouldn't be allowed out the house, let alone behind a steering wheel. It is the mental attitude or state of mind of the driver that matters. We appear to have a lot of anger issues and non-consideration of others that to me need to be addressed.

The best app will definitely be Google maps. It's free and Google keeps it up to date. I'm not sure how date hungry it is.

As far as speed limit and speed cameras. I think Google started rolling it out some time ago. But it is available from a third party app.

The cameras work. I got the fine every trip. 120 in 100 zone and keep wondering where the damn camera was until 1 day I actually read it and saw it said average speed.

And as far as ESA member is concerned, yes I have driven pretty fast to make a booking that I was running late for.

Its mainly the slow drivers who cause accidents. People who venture out on a once a year journey and "are out of their depth" on the freeway and insist on keeping at 100k/ph on the the fast lane. If fast cars are sold with large engines/braking system, why not drive faster if it is safe to do so??
Many prudes who try to be police on the roads, cause major accidents. Truck drivers and mass transport vehicles should be policed. They have a reputation for taking multiple lives. As usual they also have a strong lobby in government who will therefore never get it right.

Definitely true.
Speed don't kill. It's dumb, reckless, inconsiderate maadhirchots on the road that cause accidents.

These speed-obsessed primitives (and there are many) who infest our highways and byways are the cause of so many deaths.

What's wrong with driving at 100 km/h ?

I am of the firm belief that there is a huge difference between driving fast and driving reckless.

A fast driver is not necessarily driving reckless (assuming a fair amount of variables) whereas a reckless driver is always driving fast.

True, speed limits are there for a reason, but there is a huge difference between driving at 180 with clear visibility and no cars, and doing 180 in misty and rainy weather and/or cars around.

Driver capability is also a huge factor, but too many poephols think that they are the next Schumacher, with absolutely no skill whatsoever

I find Camsam to work quite nice. It warns of fixed cameras, gives actual speed and speed limit on road and you can also update with mobile speedtraps.

Unfortunately, it cannot be tied in with google maps

I find Google maps best for live traffic in town.

For long trips I use Waze which shows the speed limit and user reports of fixed and ad hoc traps. Generally very good.
