PeterBucks,

your ".. and watch the poor unsuspecting male tourists buying the ladyboys drinks. Can only think what will happen later ...." refers - which proves you also recognize them from a distance! As I've said, can't believe the stupid blind suckers who get caught, it is so clear that my neckhairs invariably rise...

Thanks for those restaurant tips, will check it out in due course. Garlic asparagus you say hmm? Will definitely try!

PeterBucks it sounds like your daughter told you that she wants to teach English in Thailand after varsity and you had visions of Taken.

JohnD : Without bragging too much, my daughter academic accomplishments would put her in line for the job as Thailands Minister of Education. Dad's brains. LOL. Thank God not his looks ! She is also well travelled to a number of destinations and just a really bright human being who had the misfortune to be born in SA. But the positive side of that statement is the fact that she is street wise, and also with the violent nature of crime and the corresponding high levels of crime , which we are desensitised to, makes her more aware than the next person. So I am not really worried about her being "TAKEN".

I was referring to two ladies advertising on this forum that told me that they want to go to Thailand to become English teachers. Both are Afrikaans speaking, and both will not succeed in obtaining a teaching diploma in SA. I am now being very blunt about their lack of academic capabilities. The Thai people are exposed to a lot of foreign tourists, as tourism is probably one of their biggest industries, so if you come there with little more than a rudimentary level of competence in expressing yourself in the Queen's language, then how are you ever going to be able to teach someone else the correct use of the Queen's language ? It is simply ludicrous to think that you will get that job based on the fact that you can string two English words together.

Hence my concerns regarding this "offer".

But then again, what more is a person to do ? In my case , absolutely nothing. I have expressed my grave concerns, but that familiar blank look arrived in their eyes, that look that tells you that they hear the ambient noise of your voice, but that the words that you are speaking are not registering. Maybe it is because of their lack of grey matter, maybe it is because they don't want to hear the reasoning that is sound, because they have already made up their minds to go and do it, being an escape route out of the miserable life they lead right now and to get away from the lies that is flowing now oh so easily.

Whatever reason, what will happen will happen. No more I can do. To think that you will be able to go and help them, is not really an option. They will just become a statistic.

Sad but true.

Chmoks so right.

It is just utterly frustrating to see this happening.

Let me go and shower and be naughty.

With regards to teaching in Thailand as long as you can speak English there is a 6 week Diploma Coarse that can be done both here and in Thailand. I have 2 friends teaching there and have been for the last 3 years the only thing is you could land up in a small town away from all the tourist areas but according to my friends they are not making a fortune but are comfortable and get to travel during school holidays. I have seen them every year for the last 3 years and they are not into drugs or prostitution and in fact only see a Russian when they take there holidays to the resort areas

My dear sir, let me assure you that English is not a coarse language.
The Diploma Course will set you right on that score.

Know the difference between "there" and "their".

"...when they take their holidays to the resort areas" I think you mean.

driscoll,

you had to know that, the second you mentioned a Thai with a Russian, Ben was going to chime in.
He's right though, their and there, they're different...
