This is a very serious post where we as ESA forum administrators would like to hear from the forum users as to how we should address individuals who violate our language policy.

We are all ears to any and all sensible suggestions.

I would like to qualify that we get no joy from banning any party for any reason, all banning does is dilutes our user base which is bad for ESA as a website and our users.

Kind regards

Seeing that I am a newbie here, I read the rules and will obey to ESA management. However my question is how does management want to moderate afrikaans or other language posts if management themselves struggle with the English language?

For example an Afrikaans speaking person must struggle to get his or her message accross in English, one slip of an afrikaans word gets them banned

Secondly a person speaking another language has to struggle even more, not just to get the message accross in english but to understand it too

Now you type qualify instead of clarify?
Goes to show, let the english rule fall, speak english yes I agree but leave the slang words to be used. We are South African's it is how we speak informally. Nothing to do with lack of education

When people get together and chill they don't speak proper english, but everyone understands them

I'm no moderator but there's no science to monitoring posts to ensure that users stick to the English only rule. For all you know, the forum administrator that you quoted actually wanted to "qualify" a statement that she made in her post, not clarify as you suggest.

Maybe we should understand how this came about in the first place.

Everything was fine and dandy till posts were being written in languages other than English and Afrikaans (ie. what is considered traditional African languages). If there is a discomfort in having people post in those languages than the discomfort should apply to Afrikaans as well. With that in mind the rule should either stay as English only or allow people to post in their language of choice.

If ESA feels that English only is the way to go then the current banning rule should stay and the behavior will change eventually.

Now I am really Confuculated and I asked my friend Google for help.

Qualify - means: To be entitled to a particular benefit or privilege by fulfilling a necessary condition.

or Become officially recommended as a practitioner of a particular profession or activity. Typically by undertaking a course and passing examination.

Clarify - means: Make a statement or situation less confused and more comprehensible.

Where is Ben Layden to clarify this for us?

That's the first search result that popped up on my side.

Most of us can't/don't speak our languages purely unless we really have to for work or we acting/impressing or sum other shit - we are just to in the habit of mixing languages (that's why we da rainbow nation). So therefore, the stringent language policy must be slightly relaxed, doesn't hav 2b done away with, just allow for a couple of non-English words 2b used in a paragraph

There is no 100% pure language on the planet. Languages in fact remain current and dynamic by borrowing uniquely descriptive words from other language.

I recenty witnessed a child learnng to speak. She attended a multi racial/lingual pre-school. Although her home language is Enhglish, among the first 10 words she said were a Sotho and 2 Afrikaans words.

Finally, when we get into the bedroom does it really matter what language we speak at home?

Looks like pre- schoolers are teaching a few adults a few lessons.

I think that use of colloquialisms in a different language should be permitted provided the main thrust of a post is in English. I agree that there should be a warning system and that a first offense does not result in a banning which does have significant consequences especially on the SPs.

I was banned for using the Afrikaans word for a small town.

I feel it is pathetic that a person is banned for using a one word statement in Afrikaans in an entire posting. The balance of the posting will explain to non English speaking people what the word means. If not the person who does not understand what the word means can always ask on the forum or PM the poster.

As most of the readers and posters are SA citizens, albeit in different countries in the world allow the use of a few words of any language e.g. good bye in Italian is also a well know phrase

But to ban any person without informing them of the banning I find is totally unacceptable and leans towards a dictatorship

On the other hand I need to thank ESA for the banning as I have not punted since I was banned, just a pity the ladies have lost out on an income. Hopefully I can stay away for much longer from the punting scene

Why does ESA not install a "Translate Language" app like FB ???

Then everyone can say what they like in any language and we all can click Translate if we don't understand!

Then you will even get Thai ladies and anyone who can't even read English to enjoy the forum!

Problem solved!

Agree with several previous posters: this is an English language forum and posters are discouraged from using other languages to exclude others.

I suspect ESA admin don't have time to review every inane comment on this platform and mainly respond to complaints. Let us try be more tolerant of each other and give them fewer complaints and hassles.

I am a spelling and grammar nazi. I reserve my rights to poke fun at the most egregious examples!
