Yeah well, just like little kids, dogs push their boundaries. A news paper spank on a pup, shows them they are pushing too far. Dogs that develop fear from spanking, most likely knew just spanking in their life, and very likely to start biting their owners at an old age.

It's just about a balance. Love and discipline, it's really simple. Few minutes after the news paper, call them closer. They'll be scared, but the caring voice would make them come. It would take around, 5 seconds for pups to go back into happy mode again once they seen you've forgiven them.

But in the end of the day, peeps that gets dog's just for protection, or what ever, should rather invest in an alarm system. You gotta love dogs to understand them! Or things would be going wrong...

Sooo true!!!!

The best use of the newspaper is for the owner to hit him/herself on the head with it, very hard and then google how to train a pup.

Well done sir, you must have attended one of our puppy socialisation classes ;)

Some interesting and valid reading should you wish to know why aversive training methods don't work...it's all about building a relationship of trust which then leads to much better relationships all round and your companion animal not fearing humans

pethelpful.com/dogs/An-Ear-for-an-Ear-Why-Biting-your-Dogs-Ear-Does-not-Work-aversive-techniques-forceful-punishment-do-not-work

@Tegwane I don't have an opinion on child rearing because I'm not interested in ever having human children...but as an individual with a degree in psychology I don't believe using aversive techniques on any mammal, as we all have the same fear response, will produce a relationship built on trust and understanding and therefore respect.
Have a blessed day

I can do that, I know a news paper shot won't hurt my head. But the junk on google, won't improve me on raising better dog I raised till now. Aged 7 months, perfect dog. Never to be spanked again, just speak as loud as I spoke during spankings, and the young dog gets the message that he done wrong...

I just said all that, because peeps love spoiling pups. Result = A monster up for adoption or termination... That, is wrong, discipline on a pup, just feels wrong.

The more I learn about people, the more I love my dog.
