Whilst some may perceive you to be grandiloquent, I am (apart from some select ladies) most grateful for your talented tongue, and I am convinced that the other forum members can only benefit greatly from what appears to be your conscientiously meticulous and articulate speech.

I know that you mean well in the redress of those who, like myself, are challenged in English language brevity, grammar and usage, and can only applaud your chutzpah. Furthermore, I would be most grateful to be the recipient of correction from a man of your eloquence.

Pray grant me but one small obsecration: I beseech you, kind sir, to eschew correcting The Hose of Avalon, as it provides many of us with much mirth and amusement.

PeterBucks you're dead wrong about the whole English teaching situation. Yes, of course there are scams and dodgy stories but those are in the minority. There are legitimate teaching jobs in Thailand. From teaching posts in a rural Thai school to positions in large MNCs teaching employees English they are real. I know this for a fact because during a gap year in my studies between undergrad and postgrad I traveled extensively and met a whole community of English teachers while in Thailand. There are a large number of female English teachers (Farangs) from many different countries (The UK, Australia, NZ even met some Saffers) living and working in Thailand.

So yeah, sign up for a TEFL or TOEFL or CELTA and go for it. From what I was told its a lot of fun and whilst not being the most financially rewarding job its not a bad experience (you won't be able to buy a Rolex unless its from the Chatuchak Market. Monogrammed shirts on the other hand can be done pretty cheaply by most of the tailors)

And Russian gangsters? The clubs are owned by a guy called "The Russian". Its not because of his ties to the bratva its just because he's from, believe it or not, RUSSIA! Just like in Bangkok theres a club owner called "The Arab". Shall we say he's part of the Taliban or ISIS?

JTR : No I don't think that I am dead wrong. I fully agree that there is a market for English teahers not only in Thailand, but also in Taiwan, and Vietnam and South Korea to name but a few. I also know some people on a personal level that did just that.

My pint was that you need some grey matter between your ears to be able to do it. The two ladies I was referring to, well let's put it mildly : They are not rocket scientists, and in fact their command of English is at best ? Limited.

Hence my concern.

I have also been exposed to the seedy side of the industry in Thailand, to the point where I became nauseous and had to leave. That was the tourist version. I was also offered a much more hard core option, and you could choose which nationality girl you want to see. And on that list was South Africans, in all shapes, ages and sizes.

So in closing, I do not think that I am wrong.

But then again maybe Dunning -Kruger is kicking in ?
