I was not quite sure as to why I was being called down to investigate an accidental drowning at Sandyside River but fortunately, it was a sunny day and I could not think of a better place to be. Who knows, maybe once I was done, I would get a little fishing in.

When I arrived, there were a few police officers and a small gathering of onlookers. Two of the officers were standing on the public docks talking to what looked like an extremely well tanned gentleman who was wearing a bathing suit. Next to them in the water was a canoe that looked like it had seen better days.

After approaching the trio, I introduced myself to the tanned fellow, who was looking very upset, and asked him what had happened.

“It’s simply terrible Inspector! My friend Jim and I were out canoeing when I suggested that we give the Sunnyside rapids a go,” said the distraught man as he pointed in a southern direction towards the rapids. “Jim was a little concerned as he had never been in a canoe before today but I told him there was no need to worry, I would steer, all he had to do was paddle. Unfortunately, the rapids were a little more difficult than I remembered. I‘m not sure exactly what happened or when he fell out, all that I know is that when I got to the end of the rapids, I turned around and he was not there.”

I looked down at the canoe and observed that there were a couple of lifejackets and one wooden paddle with a large crack within the blade. I was just about to inquire as to how the paddle became damaged when the man stated, “Hell, I didn’t even notice that. My paddle is broken. I guess I must have cracked it on one of the rocks while I was traversing the rapids.”

“Yes, that is possible, “ I said. “But it is more likely that it cracked when you used it to hit Jim!”

Why did Inspector Nose suspect that Jim’s drowning was not an accident?

If the man with the tan was steering then I reckon he'd see Jim fall out of the canoe.

The tanned man says he doesn't know when and what happened to Jim.But sure he shld have known the minute he fell off the boat as Jim was tasked with the paddling of the boat.
There were a couple of life jackets inside the canoe.
How is it possible that Jim ,hesitant and unsure as he was before tackling the rapids,wldn't have put one on as a safety measure?

He is also contradicting himself as to why the paddle blade is broken.Jim was supposedly paddling the canoe,and the tanned one steering the boat?

The rear seat steers, so Jim was sitting in front - and, BOTH paddle, not one only - so he lied about steering & paddling, as he broke his ow paddle!
And, no lifejackets were worn, or at least not by Jim.

The man claimed he was steering the canoe. If he was, then he should have been sitting at the back and would have seen Jim fall in the water.

Detective Nose, suspected that the man hit Jim with the paddle and pushed him overboard.

During his vacation in a small lakeside village, once again Detective Thompson must faced with a homicide case. This time, Mrs. Bennet, a local middle-age woman that was also a widow of rich businessman was found stabbed in the chest at her bedroom. Knowing Thompson reputation, local Inspector Lucas lets him examine the crime scene.

"It seems that Mrs. Bennet is familiar with the murderer, as there was no sign of struggle. The bedroom's door is locked from the inside. The possibility is that she was stabbed right in front of the door, probably when she opened the door for the killer. She then still managed to slam the door and locked it." explained the Inspector.

"She didn't die instantly, and still managed to crawl halfway to her study desk, probably looking for a pen to wrote the killer's name. Unfortunately, she didn't make it and die right next to her bed," Isnpector Lucas added.

The Inspector looked hesitate for a moment before continue with his story, "As you can see on the bed there are some gift-wrapping paper in various color. It seems that Mrs. Bennet was wrapping some boxes before the incident. When we found her body, Mrs. Bennet right hand was grasping a yellow and blue pieces of papers. Maybe she wanted to write the killer's name with blood on the paper using her left hand."

One thing for sure, all witnesses has agreed that all doors in the house are locked at the moment of the incident, which leave four suspects that happened to be inside the home that time:

Ana Lucia, a maid that has been working for a year for Mrs. Bennet. She was the first to notice something wrong when Mrs. Bennet didn't answer when she knocked the door to bringing Mrs. Bennet lunch to the bedroom.

Dr. Robert Green, Mrs. Bennet personal doctor, and rumor said it that they have an affair. The doctor said that approximately ten minutes before Ana Lucia delivered the lunch, he went to Mrs. Bennet's bedroom for their medical appointment. She didn't open the door and told the doctor to wait for a while, as she was busy.

Alan Bennet, son of the late Mr. Bennet, and Mrs' Bennet stepson. He was watching television in his room when Ana Lucia called. He and Dr. Green then broke in to Mrs. Bennet's room to found her lying dead on the floor. Alan then phoned the police and ambulance while the doctor checked Mrs. Bennet.

Tony Forrester, a friend of Alan Bennet. He didn't acquainted with Mrs. Bennet. He was already in the bathroom for 15 minutes before the incident, as he admitted that he was having a constipation during that time.

"So, what do you think detective? Apparently, all four suspects don't have a strong alibi," asked Inspector Lucas to Detective Thompson.

"Hmmm...yes it's true that there's no strong evidence that points to the killer. But you should focus your interrogation to one person," Thompson answered.

Who was Detective Thompson referring to?
