Well I never.... To Be or not to be, that is the question .... Whether it is nobler to suffer in the mind the strings and arrows of ouraged .... let's just drop it before someone mistakes Shakespeare for some semi- indigineous African language......

*English only. In the same way it is rude to speak an unknown language in front of a group of guests, the ESA forum is a public space shared by visitors of different cultures. You are welcome to use any language in Private Messages, but please use the one common language, English, on the forum. Non English posts will be locked or deleted.

When I was a child, during Apartheid, I attended Afrikaans schools, since I am Afrikaans. In primary school it was compulsory to learn English, Afrikaans and Sotho (the 3rd language offered based on the language spoken by the majority in the given province). In High School a 3rd Language was optional from grade 10 and I then chose German as my third Language.
When my kids went to primary school (English Schools), they were not taught a 3rd language at all, only English and Afrikaans - this was after the end of Apartheid. I was surprised and upset that a 3rd African language was not compulsory. Imo if you are living in such a diverse country as South Africa, then you should at minimum at least be able to speak, read and write in 3 or more South African languages.
I read last year that government was finally going to introduce a compulsory 3rd South African language in primary schools. Has this actually been implemented already?
Whilst I can understand Esa's ruling that only English should be used - so that everyone can comprehend what is written - imo instead of suppression of languages, we should be celebrating our diversity and besides, there is always google translate...
Language is closely related to identity, so it is to be expected that aggrieved people will be now be pimping on each other and it is also to be expected that people with malicious intent will use the language policy as a weapon against others.
