@ deamonza: yes, I understand your point. Every economist will tell you our tax base is wide Enough, and our taxes are high enough already. Free tertiary education in SA is possible.

Ask the Minister of Higher Education, Dr Nzimande to produce the 2012 report of the study into free education.

Free tertiary education will especially be possible if we decide against nuclear power generation; if corruption and wasteful spending in all 3 spheres of government can be reduced with a modest 10%.

Furthermore, for some ideological reason that completely lacks logic we fund some royal families at a combined cost of at least R650m per annum. (businesstech.co.za/news/government/88860/how-much-you-pay-for-south-africas-royal-families/) If just this line item on the budget is relocated from wasteful to meaningful expenditure by subsidising students, we can at 12,5% subsidise easily 90 000 students per year.

Our president's wives and extensive family costs us about R500m per annum. beta.iol.co.za/dailynews/news/zuma-wives-to-cost-taxpayers-r500m-1367244

So, plenty of evidence that there is entry of money provided there is a political will.

Could somebody tell us the total number of students registered at SA universities? And colleges?

Pray, enlighten me ye learned ladies and gentlemen:

What are the annual fees for Oxford and Cambridge universities- time honored citadels of learning.

Oxford has a different fee structure for local students (UK and EU) and overseas students. The latter don't qualify for government support. Ordinary bachelors degrees are £9000 (R190000). Seems their government subsidises about 50%. www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/fees-and-funding/tuition-fees

Same for Cambridge. Seems the above fee structure applies to all UK universities. www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/finance/tuit.ion-fees

@ Naledi, I agree with you. Let us hope these students vote in future elections with the hope of the future in their minds.

You're welcome Ben, yes they truly are mansions of knowledge. Tried, tested and approved. Above politics. Focused on and dedicated to sharing the privilege of knowledge and understanding, regardless one's background or lack thereof.

If I'm correct, our own former prime minister Jan Smuts studied at either Cambridge or Oxford.

Oh how this country cries for skilled leadership that understands the current difficulties and has the vision and skills to lead us in overcoming them and to build a future well worth looking for.

Naledi, please don't misunderstand me... I am only trying to contribute an opposing opinion into a conversation.

The only precedent these students is that anytime they do not have things their way they begin to destroy infrastructure paid for with tax payer money, and further destroy the property of other students who have chosen not to participate.

I would also point out that there is no such thing as free education, it is always paid for by the citizens of a country in one way or another. Nothing is ever free in this world.
