There are a lot of good suggestions in the responses to this thread.

English is deemed the acceptable "Universal language of the world".

However, I do feel we are not being fair by demanding "English Only"

I understand that this is an international website, but we are a diverse country, that has had many diverse changes, we are uniquely multi-cultural and that should be taken into consideration.

I do however wonder if our current constitution would make it legally acceptable to demand that we use English only?

Spot on! I never mentioned the constitution from the beginning of this language issue because I feared getting banned! It is however a solution that esa needs to find in order to create unity and allow for every voice to be heard! I suggest the allowance of other languages with a translation or explanation in english and do away with silly slip ups made by various people for example: Afrikaans words like 'ja' (yes) or 'kak'(crap)... I am english but even I slip up with the odd local colloquial jargon. It's silly and petty to ban people over one word...which those that don't understand can ask the meaning of! I also agree that esa should get someone who is well versed in english and takes the time to look up words before banning. If the forum is a feature worth keeping in terms of business...then someone who knows what they are doing needs to be employed to monitor the forum. Furthermore, that person should have good manners and a sense of decorum with people. Matt and Eddie are ideal as they are thorough and intelligent when it comes to these matters, but they unfortunately have other matters to attend to!

Just my 2c...probably all it's worth anyway! ;)

So if the server is in the US, then US laws apply.

I have no issues with ESA's rule on language use....Their site...their rules...All good.

Just have competent people to enforce them...simple!

It's sticky because for 1 thing if the company is registered locally, its a South African company. Also by name, Escort South Africa...it should fall under South African law! Not 100% but did look into it briefly. Could be wrong! But not something anyone would really take further in my opinion especially on a site like this, lol.

I am a bit af a traitor or in a two way stream in this regard as I can't deside if I agree with the rule or not.

To some extent I agree with the regulation, as previously stated, if Afrikaans is allowed then they will need to allow all languages in some future, could end in disaster.

Some Afrikaans phrases or words just can't be properly translated.

The policy of banning in my opinion is very strict and I therefore agree with some of the above,

if a word or phrase is supplied in brackets then maybe it could be alowed, or a rule that the phrase be interpreted as well.

Is it not possible to rather imply a fine which is payable on top of the members fee or the profile of the service provider before renewal.

If they are not regular members, then maybe if the fine is not payed within 7 days then there profile can be banned as they clearly do not keep to the rules.

Let's all work towards legalizing the industry first before bringing the Constitution into threads like this.

Options for ESA:
A) Leave the policy as is; in the wise words of Miss B, let's enjoy each other's bad english.
B) Allow sprinklings of any of the 11 official languages; the main thrust of any post should be understandable to anyone who speaks english. In seriousness, ESA administrators would have to ensure they have zero biases for or against any of the "alternative" languages as that will probably create feelings of unfairness amongst forum users.
C) Install translator plugin of some sort but understand that there'll be limitations as far as colloquialisms and slang are concerned.
D) Open up language policy and get a mix of admins who can understand english, afrikaans, sotho (and pray tswana and pedi are understandable to said person/s), zulu (see previous but now with ndebele, xhosa and swati), venda and tsonga.
E) Open up language policy and hope for the best.

Looking at the options, A or B are the most pragmatic without adding extra cost or effort to ESA.

Options for users:
A) If language policy is opened up; respect everyone's languages. Try use translate where you can or ask forum users for translation
B) If language policy is not amended; use the opportunity to improve your usage of the queen's tongue. thankfully all the grammar nazis seem to have died down so there's little judgement for the occasional faux pas (this phrase is borrowed from french and has entered the english lexicon so please don't ban me).
C) If language policy is amended to allow sprinkles of any of the 11 english languages, try your utmost to ensure that your comments and posts are understandable to all and not just those who speak the alternative language.

Also, don't expect equal usage of all languages on the forum. Where a post has violated the amended policy, do not respond by yourself posting something in an alternate language to make a point. Leave the administering of posts to ESA or apply to officially become an ESA administrator.

mmmmh why was this rule created ?
I am on many forums based in many countries , it's the first time I have seen language rules ... usually it's just "no profanity"
