No general limit.

Depends on the country. When arriving in SA you should declare with customs any amount of foreign currency that you have that exceeds 25k.

If you talking about taking money out of SA it is different.
25k discretionary limit, 160k authorised limit but only if we talking rands. Forex is unlimited but must be declared if above 25k (leaving or entering SA).

But I personally wouldn't declare anything that fits into a wallet.

You can travel with as much as you want, as long as you have proof of how you got hold of the money. Without any proof most countries have a limit of USD 10K before they start asking questions.

Put it in a brown envelope, FEDEX it to me, door to door.
I'll take 10% handling fees.

Folks

www.sars.gov.za/AllDocs/OpsDocs/Policies/SC-PA-01-06%20-%20Excess%20Currency%20-%20External%20Policy.pdf

Taking out of SA - unlimited if from an authorized dealer (your bank) but if a special dispensation and over the standard limit, may be worth declaring

Into other countries - depends on local regulations, many require declaration above a certain amount and you may be asked to prove the source

Back into SA, in theory everything should be declared. In practice - only funds in excess of what you took out (excluding the $100 you drew at the ATM somewhere)
