This may be dumb question, but has anyone had any luck using Tinder for a NSA hookup, or is that concept still too far fetched in SA?

Yep, I've used it successfully for the past 4 years. Locally and abroad. It's quite a hit in Kenya and Rwanda as well.

I've had some luck with tinder. Only once did it ended up being a dinner date rather than a hook up, but on other occasions 7 times it worked well. I use it exclusively when I travel (locally & abroad), so no experience of Jhb.

From experience, I tried it in Dubai and Kenya, most of the ladies there are pt escorts.
