I learned yesterday that when the brits came to my late grandma's house (she was 5 then) they sent before then a solid line of burnt grass, livestock and everything. sparing only lives but leaving them destitute. when word of the approaching kakies came, the man who was working for them gathered 30 of their cattle and chased them from the farm near ladybrandt into lesotho. he told nobody nothing, just "ran off" with the cattle.
skip ahead post consentration camp and rebellion stupidity and 5 years later they returned empty handed to a non existent farm. without options thet started to plant small scale and borrowed a cow from a neighbour. 3 month later the man came back. bringing with him the 30 cattle he saved plus their offspring of the past 5 years!!!!!
to my shame, my family story did not retain any more on the hero of their "ressurection".
I am just so happy i learned this even if more than a century ago.

again as in some of my other posts; why should you care and why do i share it here?
just so spread some good news and to counter the assumption that black and white has always been at war. loyalty is colour blind! lets build from that

Beautiful story...

My little girl opened up my eyes... she's only 4 years old but when I dropped her at school on Thursday she run to her friends and told me... "Ouma... this is Kagetla (a black girl) and she's my best friend in the whole world... and this is Katie (a Indian girl) and she's my best friend too..."
I was speechless, yet so happy for her... she don't see colour at all!!! But it's harder for us who grew up with racist parents...
This little girl of mine is such a happy child, and I'll never take it away from her... she is a way better person than I am...

The Anglo-Boer war: These.

The British despised the Afrikaners as much as they despised the aboriginal inhabitants of South Africa. They referred to black people by the k-word. And they referred to Afrikaners as "the Dutch" or "the Boers".
Oom Paul Kruger chose to live in exile rather than live under British rule in the Transvaal.

History tends to forget it was the British that brought the only-whites vote.
Their plan to devide the blacks and the boers unfortunately worked well for long. :(((

But be that as it my, good one Porky, we need more stories like that!

So in honour of the family saviour, you should dress like a Basotho for Heritage day...or maybe better...book a Basotho lady for the day...LOL

Good to hear stories of/from people that are directly connected to the original settlers/immigrants.
Are there any others on ESA,that have a direct traceable line to their forefathers?

Good Idea SS, but can you imagine how suspicious folks will look at me if I start asking ethnicity questions? As it is folks are so quick to see a racist behind even the most innocent question. New pickup line: "Hey, show me your passport and maybe, Ill book you!" ? LOL!

wrt tractability; on my father's side we can trace back to 1664. The guy was a mason and came specifically to help build the castle.
