There is no simple answer to this question and there has been volumes written about it. In most cases, it comes down to natural selection. The "jerks" are usually also usually confident and aggresive. Typical alpha male. And the alpha male gets his choice of mate.

It is all about confidence...

Jerks express a certain amount of self confidence that keeps the everage guy at bay. Keeping a certain amount of guys away makes a woman feel safe when she's around the so called jerk. May I add guys that appear to be jerks aren't really jerks they just do it because they understand that it creates distance between themselves and unknown chance takers

May I add men do all sorts of things to protect what they believe is theirs and what they want that often gets confused with jealousy.

I wish I knew the answer to this as I always end up with the bad ones! Changing that though.

But many jerks actually are really jerks. There is a difference (I think) between a bona fide jerk and the classical successful "alpha male".


Any ways, it is an interesting question that sometimes has no logical answers. For example I can't understand why women choose to stay with jerks that physically fucks them up every weekend, says sorry on Monday and the lady stays, gladly nursing the bruises.

I once witnessed this scene outside a shopping centre. Gorilla jerk slapping the wife/girlfriend around. Good samaritans come to the rescue and start smacking the gorilla around. Dishevelled wife/girlfriend goes ballistic screaming at the good samaritans to leave him. Few seconds later she helps him up and off they go. WTF moment.
