I am thoroughly pissed off!
I was looking forward to binging on game of thrones only to find that my external has been formatted.
My douchebag brother went and pawned it at cash crusaders without my knowledge. Now it seems when he paid them back the money, they had already formatted my drive. There is absolutely nothing. All my files collected over years are gone!
My question is, are they allowed to tamper with the drive when it only serves as collateral?
What can I do to make them pay for what they've done?

@DNA: there is data recovery software available, but it is expensive and there are no gaurantees. It also depends on the level of formatting the Cash Cowboys did.
If I were you I would task by brother with a list to source the lost content again, if possible.

@ DNA, I feel your pain boss. Those naaiers at Cash crusaders were not allowed to tamper with the device within the stipulated pawn period.
Fuck, I probably have about 16 or 18 external harddrives full of stuff. Twice I blew 3.5" hard drives and lost the stuff. Hence I only buy the 2.5" drives.
If you can't recover, get an uncapped Internet subscription, or even better get a Telkom LTE sim and pay R50 for 500Gigs night time surfer valid for 30 days. Configure your torrent client to only download between 12am and 7am. And let it run. Will take time but one alternative.
Other better alternative is to rebuild content from all your friends' hard drives.

It was illegal content anyway - the more reputable data recovery people won't even help you recover it. Plus it will cost a lot. As someone else said just get the content again. Its not like it takes more than about 8 seconds with a Google search to find 4000 places you can either download or stream GoT from.
