Unfortunately doors on most machines have a locking mechanism that will not allow opening if water is still trapped in machine drum. Try running spin cycle a few times as it sounds like your pump is faulty or blocked by fluff.
There's usually a small trap door at bottom front of machine where one can manually empty water from within machine, and at the same time, clean out sump and dirt trapped in pump.
