Go on private property, see which houses are let out by private owners directly and not through agents. Contact owner directly. Be prepared to pay in advance as Melina says, it takes a lot of the risk away for the owner, particularly if you can't produce payslips etc.
And if you get a place, be a good tenant, look after the place, keep a low profile. Don't give neighbours anything to be suspicious about. If in a complex, don't throw parties or have a dog that bothers the neighbours, once they are on to you for something they'll be watching you closely for reasons to get you kicked you out, and it will only be a matter of time until they notice men coming in and out.
