Terrible? No damages here. I'm just glad the much needed rain is eventually here.

Direct strike on my house. Lost my DStv, Marantz surround sound amp, Xtreamer media streamer, 2 ADSL modems one of which was a very expensive (R12k) Cisco ADSL router, and the sound card on my PC. I am glad for the rain but I am somewhat underimpressed with the lightning!

Nope no insurance claim :) I had forgotten to add both the Marantz and the Cisco to my list of insured devices and the others aren't worth claiming for. I wanted a new amp anyway so maybe I should be thanking the lightning :) Not thrilled about the Cisco though.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience Oraljim. In thunder and lightning storms such as the one referred to it is best to plug out all electrical equipment.

Thanks Savanna. Being the geek I am it would take me longer than the storm lasts to unplug everything :) Most of the stuff is on surge protectors or UPS's but all the damage except for my PC sound card was caused by the TV aerial which wasn't protected. Both ADSL modems were on surge protectors (one was a cheapy, the other was a very good APC one) and they did no good. The lightning was truly magnificent though, it reminded me a lot of Arizona.
