So im starting a job in joburg with a well known company 1st Feb 2008 in Marshalltown. I have never been that side of the world. I hear its hi-jackings left right and centre and Nigerian pimps all over the show, and people get shot for some stupid reasons as well. Well thats the perception us cape boys got. Well would love to stay in the cape but they made me an offer i cant refuse, and being coloured and got chosen over some black students (im a varsity student)is a miracle so i wont let it slip me by.

What i need to know is how Marshalltown is? Where should i live? I was thinking Braamfontein because i was told its close to Marshalltown and the closest decent area. Obviously Sandton would rock or Woodmead but then i got heavy fucking traffic going into work?

So if anybody got some tips for me regarding where to go and where not to go, what is the dangerous areas in jozi? Would braamfontein be a good place to live and what exciting is close to braamfontein to do?

MuffDaddy, believe me, they may as well call Jburg something like Little Lagos - well, some parts anyway. As for where you should live? Mmmmm, the traffic is UNBEFUCKINGLIEVABLE! You may PRAY for a hijacking because they seem to be the only ones who can make a quick getaway... Any suburb is good, or bad. My suggestion is to look for any security village, gated community, or something like that. But this, too, is no guarantee. Friends of mine have had to endure TWO armed robberies in their home in a very, very posh area. Yeah, to really set your mind at ease: they have relocated to Cape Town....

Marrshall, now that u happened to mention little Lagos, I live 65km outside of Lagos, hey Jo'berg is the Vatican City compared to this place when it comes to crime, and Jo'berg is like Eenskop-op-vok-ville in the Karoo wen it comes to trafic.

Muffdaddy, I've been to Lagos and Kinshasa and Luanda, and believe you me, Johannesburg has a LOOOOOOONG way to slide before it's even close to those places.

Braamfontein is OK, but you can do a lot better. Look at Parktown North, Parkview, Parkhurst, Melsrose, Killarney, etc.

It seems it's only you half-asleep Capies that get hijacked. We're wide awake this side of the Karoo. :-)

There are also good suburbs South Of Johannesburg which could be relatively cheaper than Sandton and the rest of the North. What you can do is to rent in a newly renovated flat in Braamfontaein or Newtown for a short priod and use that time to look for the area of your choice.

A lot has been said about Nigerians in this forum. The major crime Nigerians are involveld in is drugs. Other crimes such as hijacking, robbery etc are committed by almost all natinalities, including South Africans. I don't condone drugs and I am not defending Nigerians, but if you are not involved in drugs, and are not stupid enough to give them your bank account thinking that you will get rich quickly, there is no reasons to be scared of them!

Land Lover, and any one else for that matter, if you ever come to Nigeria and need to get layed allow my to give you some numbers to contact, got a few very good looking university part timers that will give you a great time as well as show you around. Lagos is a very dangerous place if you don't know the ropes, but you can have a real gas if you are in the rite company.

I do whatever is possible to avoid going back to Lagos ;-( As you say, it's a dangerous place, and if anyone thinks Joburg is a shithole, they've never been in a real shithole.

Bill is mostly correct, but the Nigerians are also very involved in building hijacking where they come into a building, extort money for 'rent' and intimidate the legitimate building owner to leave them alone. They also get involved in general smuggling such as cigatettes, DVD's etc.

Many of the hijackings are being done by Zimbabweans, Basotho, and Swazis. (as well as our own homegrown hijackers)

In my experience, most Congolese and Malawians in SA are very nice, hardworking people who are just trying to have a better life than back home.

I live in Pretoria and work in Johannesburg every day. I once had a housebreaker who was chased onto the houses' roof by my dogs and who got wings and flew into the neighbour's property when I arrived on the roof with my Colt .45.

The only problem that I ever encounter is the huge traffice jams, running between Jhb and Pta. It's actually almost royal to live in a nice Pta suburb.

So Muffdaddy chill out man. You are going to have a lot more of greatest working girls available in Jhb and Pta.
