i will be in j'burg on business and wantedto know how safe it really is to go out at night? if i wanted to go to a club or one of the girls on this site how easy/safe is that. can a taxi be trusted and to get back can one be called to a house?

Johannesburg is relatively safe IF you follow the advice of others.

Places to AVOID (at all costs if you're alone):
Hillbrow, Yeoville, Berea, Johannesburg Central (the downtown area), Braamfontein at night.

Don't go wandering around at night alone unless you know exactly how safe the area is. If you're staying in central Sandton, then the area is pretty safe, and the normal big-city precautions apply.

Taxis can be a problem. Always use a reputable taxi company such as Roses or Maxi Taxi, and get your driver's cellphone number so that you can call him. Taxis tend to be expensive, so hiring a car might be a usefull alternative.

Here's the bottom line: Johannesburg is very safe at night if you're in an established area such as a mall, a shopping centre, or restaurant/club. The only time you might have problems is while you're outside. (Just watch your bag when you're in clubs/restaurants)
